Compensating Stitches

While all of these stitches will link beautifully to themselves one element after another, combining a few varieties of decorative stitches within the same work will often produce some small, odd spaces of empty canvas. This is where compensating stitches are called for in order to cover the canvas. If you are creating a symmetrical design such as in the Nouveau Needle Cushion project, keep in mind the overall effect that any regularly appearing compensating stitches will have on the final work before deciding on their color scheme. I tend to compensate with a tent stitch here and there as necessary and choose their color scheme based on supporting the overall composition of the work.
